Attorney Brian Kopp is one of the founding partners of Betras, Kopp & Harshman, LLC and is licensed to practice in Ohio and Florida. Prior to joining the firm in 1997,
Brian served as a federal law clerk to U.S. District Judge Peter C. Economus.
His experience as a federal law clerk laid the foundation for his future courtroom endeavors. Following his clerkship, he began to handle various cases with a focus on civil and federal criminal trial work. In 1999, at the age of 29, Attorney Kopp won his first wrongful death verdict in the case Katherine Biles vs. Warren General Hospital. Subsequently, he began handling increasingly complex civil and criminal matters.
Attorney Kopp became the managing partner of Betras, Kopp & Harshman’s litigation department in 2000. In that role he is responsible for the preparation and presentation at trial of the firm’s most challenging and complex matters. He also handles appellate work related to these cases. Attorney Kopp, with the able assistance of his staff, has argued cases in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit as well as Ohio’s Seventh and Eleventh District Courts of Appeals. He has also been admitted pro hac vice for litigation purposes in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California and Florida.
From 1999-2009 Attorney Kopp obtained favorable results in the following cases among many others: United States vs. Russell Saadey, Jr., Mays vs Allstate, The Estate of Daniel Aldrich vs. American Manufacturers, and The Estate of Darlene Ross vs. St. Elizabeth Hospital, The Estate of Victoria Rendano vs. St. Elizabeth Hospital, and Randy Graham vs. Werner Enterprises. A number of these cases resolved disputed principles of law within their respective jurisdictions and the awards obtained in Ross, Rendano, and Graham rank among the largest of their kind in the area. In addition, Attorney Kopp has successfully defended various business entities in cases involving the United States Justice Department and State Attorney General’s office and in matters related to civil liability.
In addition to his work at Betras, Kopp & Harshman, Attorney Kopp served Edward J. DeBartolo, Jr.’s sports-focused company in various capacities from 2007 until 2012. Mr. DeBartolo, former owner of the San Francisco 49ers, founded DeBartolo Sports in 2005. As an executive officer and Authorized House Counsel for DeBartolo Sports, Attorney Kopp handled the sale of various divisions of the sports company and aided in the partial acquisition of entities that are now the foundation of DeBartolo Sports and Events. Brian continues to consult with his friend and respected mentor, Mr. DeBartolo, in the representation of college football coaches and other aspects sport’s law.
Attorney Kopp has been recognized by his peers for his outstanding work. In 2000 he was named Mahoning and Trumbull Counties Trial Lawyer of the Year. He was featured in Lawyers Weekly in 2004 for the verdict in Graham vs. Werner in 2004, and was listed as one of America’s Top 100 Lawyers by the American Trial Lawyers Association. Attorney Kopp is a member of the American Bar Association, Ohio Bar Association and Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers. He has also been selected on two occasions to serve on the Merit Selection Panel for United States magistrate judges for the Northern District of Ohio.
Attorney Kopp is married to Lori Kopp and has seven daughters, Julia, Ally, Olivia, Emma, Ava, Audrey and Amelia.
